The best catchers are alway the best teammates. If you don’t remember anything else from this series of blog posts we hope that you’ll remember that simple fact. There are no exceptions.

Next up in our How to Be a Great Teammate Series is #17: Show You Care.

#17: SHOW YOU CARE

Great teammates care more about their effort. They care more about their performance. They care more about how they are impacting the team. And, most of all, they care more about their teammates… To be a great teammate, it’s important to show your teammates that you care about them… [and] find your own unique way (I call this a caring trademark) that shows them you care. When you show your team you care about them, they will care about you. When you care, you will inspire others to care. When you care, you will build a team that cares, and a team that cares will accomplish amazing things together (Gordon, Jon (2015-04-24). The Hard Hat: 21 Ways to Be a Great Teammate (pp. 67-68). Wiley. Kindle Edition).

Take a minute and think… who is the best teammate you ever played with? It can be any sport, any age, any level. Who do you remember as the best person that you enjoyed playing with the most?

Now that you have a name in mind, think about another question… did that teammate care about you? Did he/she care about the team?

I’m confident that the answer to both of those questions is a resounding yes. As Jon Gordon shares in the quote above, great teammates care. Plain and simple. They care as much or more than anyone else and they aren’t afraid to show it. And most importantly, they care about the most important things above all else.

One more question for you… do you remember the stats of that teammate you have in mind?

I’m also confident that you don’t remember that teammates’ stats nearly as well as you remember what it felt like to play with him/her and have him/her as a teammate.

The best teammates care about their team and their fellow teammates, and they lead by example in helping others do the same.

If you want to be a great catcher, you must also be a great teammate. And, one very important way to be a great teammate is to show you care.
